I will admit I needed to read Plato’s Allegory over a few times to have an understanding “brought to light.” The prisoners in the cave are living in darkness, and when I say darkness, I do not mean a lack of light. They have been subjected to only seeing shadows that they believe are living things. If a prisoner were to escape and realize that what they believed to be genuine was only shadows, would those who were still in prison believe him upon his return? This allegory, or symbolic representation, demonstrates how we interact in the world. We believe what we have been taught and have experienced is reality. While some are unwilling to change their mindset, they stay in their reality as a means of comfort.

While reading Pericles’ Funeral Oration, I saw the celebrations of life and commitment given to fallen soldiers. The speech praised the Athenians who contributed to not submitting and evoking patriotism. The speech was given to persuade those listening to understand the next steps in the grieving process. He mentions those of the age for the battle to prepare to be called upon and parents of the deceased to produce more children to continue generations for Athens. Pericles praises the citizens of Athens who put aside wants and focus on the greater good of the city. This was an example of how Athenian democracy was put into place. They were open to laws and changes to continue the success of Athens. This was a unique democracy; citizens made decisions through meetings and voting.
