Hi! My name is Jack Sauder. I’m a Junior at Roberts Wesleyan University, where I’m pursuing a degree in Sports Management. As a dedicated student-athlete, I have the incredible opportunity to compete as a pole vaulter on the Roberts Wesleyan track and field team with Jenn and Rick Suhr as my coaches.
Studying sports management will allow me to combine my passion for athletics with the skills needed to build a career in the sports industry. A love for competition and impact drives me.
I began my pole vault experience in my junior year of high school. I attended Hinsdale Central High School, which is located in Hinsdale, Illinois. My interest peaked when I began vaulting in January 2020. As we all know, the pandemic hit in February, we were sent home, and online learning began. Along with that, training halted. I was unwilling to wait, so my Dad and I built a pole vault pit in our backyard. I continued with my Dad as my coach.
My parents searched for meets that were happening in person, so we were able to keep my training going. During spring break that year, I discovered the Daniel Ryland Pole Vault camp located in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. My family and I arrived without knowing what to expect. I was blown away because Daniel Ryland had once coached Mondo Duplantis. Currently, Mondo is the number one pole vaulter in the world. Not surprisingly, my drive to compete was fueled even more by my experience there.
We returned to in-person learning. Track and field events were back up and running. I qualified for the State competition. At the competition, I met my goal of making a personal best, a PR. The circumstances of the pandemic were not ideal; however, this time, it strengthened me to be accountable for my academics and my dedication to pole vaulting.
I went into college with a desire to graduate with a sports management degree. I have also begun flight training to become a pilot eventually. At this time, at Roberts Wesleyan, I am pausing my flight lessons due to my academic and training schedule.
When not vaulting over bars or studying, I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family and friends. I am up for challenges in my life. This past year, I went sky-diving for the first time. My ultimate goal is to work in the sports world, where I can continue to grow and contribute to the sporting community.
